Hoot Gibson appointed interim president of Baker University

Baker University is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Hoot Gibson as interim president, effective immediately. Gibson will hold this position while the university conducts a search for its 30th president, expected in 2025.

With over 20 years of dedicated service as a member of Baker University’s Board of Trustees, Gibson has demonstrated a profound commitment to the university. A proud alumnus, Gibson has consistently supported the university through numerous high-impact initiatives, including leading efforts to secure Baker’s place in wills and trusts as well as his personal contributions to the Baker University Athletic Hall of Fame. Notably, Gibson helped secure the funds that led to the renovation of Mulvane Hall to create the Ivan L. Boyd Center for Collaborative Science Education, home of Baker’s biology program and other essential academic programs.

“We are thrilled to name Hoot as our interim president and could not think of a better person to lead Baker University forward in our continued success as a university,” said Baker University Board of Trustees Chair Brenda Stasiulis. “As a longstanding member of our Board of Trustees and a proven leader of several transformative university initiatives, Hoot has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to Baker’s mission and values. We welcome Hoot to this new role and look forward to ensuring a seamless transition for our university.”

Gibson will provide support that will maintain continuity in the university’s operations in preparation for Dr. Lynne Murray’s departure in December of 2024. Gibson brings extensive executive leadership experience to this role. He previously served as president of Waypoint Mutual Insurance Company, where he demonstrated a proven track record of strategic leadership and organizational growth. Gibson earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business from Baker University in 1973.

“I am deeply honored to step into the role of interim president of my alma mater and continue serving the university that has meant so much to me,” said Gibson. “Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with our incredible faculty, staff, students and trustees to advance initiatives that strengthen our mission. As we navigate this transition period, I remain committed to fostering collaboration, innovation and academic excellence. Together we will continue to build on the strong foundation that makes Baker University so special.”

Baker University will remain focused on its mission of delivering a top-tier liberal arts education under Gibson’s leadership during the transitional period.
