Cecil Miller grew up in Baldwin City and remained in his hometown to attend Baker University, where he earned a bachelor’s in business administration and met his wife, Carol Lee (Turk) Miller, ’55.

Cecil MillerHe was a lifelong supporter of the university, most formally as a member of the Board of Trustees from 1969-1977, serving as chair from 1976-1977. He returned to the Board from 1980-1991, serving as chair from 1985-1988.

“Cecil Miller was a true pillar of our community. As a former trustee, he helped shape our institution through his leadership and his support. His contributions to the university will never be forgotten and will continue to impact the lives of our students. His and Carol Lee’s legacy will forever be an inspiration,” said Lynne Murray, Baker University President.

Miller served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956 and earned a master’s degree from the University of Kansas. He enjoyed a successful career as a CPA and partner with the Peat Marwick Mitchell (now KPMG) accounting firm from 1957-1990.

For his tireless support of Baker University, he received the Alumni Citation Award in 1979, an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 1983, and the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1989.

“Cecil has been carved into Baker’s Mount Rushmore of alumni. He always stepped up. No matter the cause and no matter the occasion—he was there. Yet, he was so humble and rarely took any credit. We will miss him dearly,” said Doug Barth, director of Alumni Relations.
