Virginia (Thieme) Ness, former student, 99, January 3, 2022, Baxter Springs, Kansas. Survivors include daughters Melissa Ness, Baker University Board of Trustees member, and Christine Hartley, and son-in-law Ross Hartley, ’70.
Ness, an English major, treasured her years at Baker University and the opportunity to immerse herself in the world of language and words, and she always remembered the kindness of her professors. Because of financial hardship she was unable to finish her degree. In 2016 the university awarded her an honorary bachelor’s degree. Ness served several companies in the role of executive secretary. She served as associate editor of the Baxter Springs Citizen and marketing officer of American National Bank. She and her late husband, Edmund Ness, co-owned Baxter Springs Fixtures Co. A lifelong learner, Ness served on the Johnston Public Library Board of Directors and as a docent at the Baxter Springs Historical Museum, and she volunteered for the Red Cross Bloodmobile.
