Candice Millard ’89 returned to Baker University for a powerful and memorable afternoon exploring history, leadership, and storytelling. In a wide-ranging conversation, the New York Times bestselling author discussed her acclaimed book Destiny of the Republic, the assassination of President James A. Garfield, and the journey from page to screen as her work inspired Netflix’s historical drama Death by Lightning.

Students, alumni, faculty, and community members gathered to hear Millard reflect on forgotten chapters of American history, the importance of libraries and literature, and the responsibility of leaders in divided times. The result was an event that was both deeply historical and strikingly relevant.
