What was the first moment that made Baker feel like home?
The first moment that Baker felt like home was during my initial meeting with faculty at the School of Professional and Graduate Studies. The warmth and genuine interest they had in my goals, even as a nontraditional student, made me feel immediately supported and understood. It was clear that Baker was committed to my success from day one.
What was your favorite class and why?
It wasn’t just one class, but the entire academic program at Baker that made the biggest impact. The courses combined theory with real-world application, and every class contributed to my growth. The program’s flexibility and supportive environment gave me a well-rounded education that has been crucial to my career. Each class built on the last, creating a smooth and valuable learning experience.
Who made the biggest impact on you while at Baker?
There were many influential professors, but the biggest impact came from collaborating with my classmates. They pushed me to step out of my comfort zone and helped me see my career and opportunities in a new way.
What are two things that you would say to current students?
First, embrace every challenge because it will shape you in ways you can’t imagine. Second, don’t hesitate to lean on the incredible support system at Baker—they are there to help you thrive, no matter your circumstances.
How did your Baker experience shape your career?
Baker provided the foundation for my professional growth. The skills, connections, and confidence I gained while at Baker opened doors I never thought possible. My career has truly exploded since graduation, and I know that none of this would have been achievable without the education and support I received at Baker.
Can you briefly describe your career path since graduating from Baker?
Since graduating from Baker, my career has progressed through leadership roles in the banking industry and banking education. I was promoted to vice president at Bankers Bank of Kansas, then moved to take on a new role as president at Farmers & Merchant’s State Bank. I later moved again to the Community Bankers Association of Kansas, where I’ve been the president and chief executive officer since 2009. Additionally, I’ve been a regent at the Barret Graduate School of Banking in Memphis since 2011. I have also continued to further my education, earning a Graduate Designation from the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado, an Executive Leadership Certification from the University of Colorado, and a Business Strategy Certification from Cornell University.
What do you love about Baker the most?
What I love most about Baker is the way they support their students—whether traditional or nontraditional. They are truly invested in each person’s success, and that makes all the difference. The sense of community and dedication to providing the best possible education is unparalleled.
